Fall Into Jazz: Celebrating Billy May's Centennial
The Glass City Swing Band present, Fall Into Jazz: Celebrating Billy May's Centennial. Billy May, an arranger and composer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, would have been 100 years old on November 10, 2016; thus, the Glass City Swing Band found it very fitting to put together a concert centered around his life.
Even if you've never heard of Billy May, you know him, he has established a relationship with a good number of the top performers of the 1930's and 1940's such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He was also known to use a bit of satire in his arrangements and compositions making them stand out from the standard arrangements of the day.
The performance will be held Thursday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Hall Theater located on the Westmoreland County Community College campus in Youngwood, PA. Admission $12.
The Glass City Swing Band is located in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania in the City of Jeannette, formally known as The Glass City. We are an 18-piece big band mainly performing music of the 1930's and 1940's. Our mission is to promote community oriented music programs, musical education and historical music programs and disabilities awareness through music. GCSB was formed in 2009 and became an incorporated 501(c)(3) in July of 2015. The band's members are made up of professional musicians, music educators, retired music educators, and community musicians; some of whom have been performing together for over 30 years. Our performance together gives the band members a great feeling of self worth and provides our audience with quality performances.
GCSB also uses these historical educational performances to help raise funds for other projects relating to our mission statement such as a disabilities awareness fair planned for next fall and also a concert in April, 2017 honoring Ella Fitzgerald.
