Originally commissioned by the Lancaster Chorale in Lancaster Ohio, professor Jeffrey Van sets Walt Whitman's "Four Civil War Poems" for mixed choir and classical guitar. The music captures the melancholy of this tragic part of our nation's history. The four movements describe the silence in camp preceding battle, the battle itself, and the bodies lying in the moonlight before burial. Movements are: By the Bivouac's Fitful Flame, Beat! Beat! Drums!-Blow!, Look Down Fair Moon, and Reconciliation.
