Denver Broncos UK ~ Manifest Destiny
Denver Broncos UK features Munly Munly, Slim Cessna, Lord Dwight Pentacost and Rebecca Vera, musicians who have been working together for more than a decade as part of Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, and Munly and the Lupercalians. Although working on these other well-known projects for over a decade, the Denver Broncos UK have played live only once for their world debut at the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh PA in 2009. Though the music itself may be unclassifiable, the band's songs are best described as dynamic, suspenseful and beautiful. The sparse arrangements feature an array of instruments put to exotic use; guitar, autoharp, accordion, bowed banjo, and numerous percussive instruments; creating a landscape inhabited by haunted vocal harmonies. The sum of all parts reveals itself as a darkly-lit celebration of traditional American music, forged into a surprising new form.
For the Kansas City performances Denver Broncos UK will be a featured part of Manifest Destiny, a room-sized installation designed by artist Renée Cinderhouse. Manifest Destiny is a life-sized pop-up book dreamscape; walking through a forest littered with encyclopedia-tree leaves, the viewer encounters vignettes and dioramas of delicately poetic and surreal sculptures. Exquisitely crafted out of porcelain, the work alludes to our collective history as a nation and culture; how history is written and re-written, how the personal is political and the political is public, and our ability as individuals to rewrite, reinterpret, and make history.
We are pleased to announce Amy Farrand, Adam Lee and Jeff Harshbarger as our featured opening acts:
Friday Sept 28th: Amy Farrand with Denver Broncos UK
Awarded "Best singer/songwriter" by the Kansas City Pitch Music Awards in 2012, Amy Farrand is an established artist who has been making music for over 30 years. An adept multi-instrumentalist with a unique honest voice, Farrand reaches right into your soul and holds you there, forcing you to face your truths no matter how uncomfortable.
Saturday Sept. 29th: Adam Lee with Denver Broncos UK
In the world of a working musician there is no greater constant than the road, from wild nights in far away towns, to barroom brawls and goodbye kisses, Adam Lee's songs expertly explain the highs and lows of life on the road. Touching on the more subtle tones of Americana, and refining his unique take on classic country, Adam Lee's basement baritone perfectly presents songs to drink and cry to.
Sunday Sept. 30th: Jeff Harshbarger with Denver Broncos UK
"I am delighted to perform within Renee Cinderhouse's Manifest Destiny. We share a vision of both the purpose and fallacies of folklore and memory. Inspired by the music of our nation's earliest days, I hope to further explore the subtleties of our culture's aural traditions, both real and imagined." -Jeff Harshbarger
Jeff Harshbarger has been a major voice in the creative community of Kansas City for over a decade. Holding such honors as The Kennedy Center's Betty Carter Fellowship and The Steans Institute Fellowship, he has collaborated with both musicians (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Bobby Watson, Eugene Chadborne) and visual artists (Nick Cave, David Ford, Sissel Tolaas) to create innovative work that defies genre. He is a co-founder of Tzigane Music, an artist-run collective and record label, and is the curator of Jeff Harshbarger Presents: An Alternative Jazz Series, promoting new improvised music in Kansas City.
