Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Matthew Shipp and Michael Bisio Duo!
"Matthew Shipp is the American Piano Jazz Mature Secret. In the shadow of Cecil Taylor and Keith Jarrett, he has played out his individuality through three decades. He can be described as a cross between the two giants, but he exceeds both, with its ownership of the blues and the free expression's inherent possibilities." - Arild R. Andersen, Aftenposten (google translation). After moving to New York in 1984 he quickly became one of the leading lights in the New York jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell's Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music. Mr Shipp has reached the holy grail of jazz in that he possesses a unique style on his instrument that is all of his own- and he's one of the few in jazz that can say so. Matthew Shipp is truly one of the leading lights of a new generation of jazz giants.
Michael's playing processes the bass from its rootedness in jazz tradition through the avant in ways that show him one of the primary stylistic and virtuoso masters of the bass arts today. He has a pizzicato and a bowing approach that identify him immediately (in a blindfold test, let's say) as a player with the deep tone of bass greats yet a mercurial imagination that makes for noteful significance and real originality.
