Songs For a New World
Union Street Theatre ends its 2012 Summer Main Stage season with a show-stopping collection of transformational stories by one of musical theater's brightest composers. Songs For A New World was originally conceived as a "theatrical cabaret" to showcase the work of then-unknown Jason Robert Brown (13, Parade), and it put him on the map when it opened at Off-Broadway's WPA Theater in 1995. Brown went on to win a Tony Award for Best Score for Parade in 1999 and Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics for The Last Five Years in 2001. Soaring melodies and irresistible rhythms mark this collection of story-songs. The audience will be transported from moment to moment in the lives of an array of characters from a variety of eras, all looking and hoping for the realization of a "new world."
