Caribbean Film Screening
This year, we're kicking off our community night film screening season, at a new spot in Brooklyn - the Made in NY Media Center, Dumbo. We'll be bringing you an intimate look at the making of vintage Jamaican dancehall album by a pair of DJs from Israel.
CONGO BEAT THE DRUM
Kalbata & MixMonster | Israel
Filmed in Jamaica (2015)
Two musicians from Tel Aviv travel to Jamaica to record an album with forgotten reggae artists. The film follows Ariel Tagar (Kalbata) and Uri Wertheim (Mixmonster), from their basement studio in Tel Aviv, all the way to the Kingston ghettos, looking for their favourite singers of days gone by. In Jamaica, they encounter a strange, often challenging culture while trying to achieve their goal. The film is a unique musical journey into the forgotten corners of reggae of the seventies and eighties, and a rare glimpse into the smoky, dusty world of Rub-a-Dub and its past champions.
This screening will be preceded by the screening of the short film, Egress, a moving story on the the issue of homelessness in New York City. The film was a big winner at the 2015 Barbados Film and Video Awards.
Sean M. Field | Barbados
Filmed in New York (2014)
Elliot Bishop, is homeless and searching for hope in a world that doesn't know he exists. He's given up all he has except for distant memories of happier times. From the coffeeshop, to the sidewalk, to the cemetery, the City is Elliot's stomping ground. There is no navigation system to guide him through hunger and self-doubt, all he can do is continue to sharpen his skills and strengthen his resolve as he prepares for the challenge of his lifetime. Egress is a story of a man forced to evolve from his past to transcend the painful sacrifice of the present so he can bravely grasp the opportunity to create his future.
