Spotlight on THAT NIGHT: Kenny Endo
WHAT Kenny Endo, world renowned taiko master based in Hawaii, was there at THAT NIGHT during the I-Hotel eviction, August 4, 1977. On Saturday, May 19, 2012, he returns to the I-Hotel with an ensemble of national guests to perform a special benefit concert in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the eviction. Featuring Kenny Endo (taiko set, odaiko, tsuzumi), Shoko Hikage (koto), Kaoru Watanabe (bamboo flutes, taiko), Abe Lagrimas Jr. (vibraphones, ukulele, drums, taiko), and Chizuko Endo (taiko, percussion).

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Kenny Endo is a performer, composer, and leader of contemporary taiko. He has paved new directions in taiko, bringing a creative approach to music through his background in western percussion, world music, and Japanese drumming. His music blends neo-traditional taiko rhythms with original melodies and improvisation. Endo has performed locally and internationally and has worked with acclaimed artists of various mediums in innovative collaborations. www.kennyendo.com
Shoko Hikage began playing koto at the age of three with the Ikuta-ryu Sokyoku Seigen Kai in Akita prefecture, Japan. Hikage performs regularly in solo situations and in collaboration with a wide range of artists from every genre. She currently resides in San Francisco where she continues her pursuits in improvisational dance and music.
Kaoru Watanabe performed with the drumming ensemble, Kodo. He has traveled the world with Kodo, and performed original compositions on stage at Carnegie Hall. In 2005 he became Artistic Director of Earth Celebration, Kodo's annual world music festival held in Sado every summer. In 2006 he moved back to New York City, but continues to work closely with Kodo.
Abe Lagrimas Jr. was born in March 1983 in the U.S. territory of Guam. He began playing drums at the age of 4. As the house drummer for the Hawaii International Jazz Festival, Abe has performed with saxophonist Eric Marienthal, Hollywood film composer Lalo Schifrin, Santana's bassist Benny Reitveld, Brian Setzer Orchestra's Matt Zebley, among many others. Aside from his drumming and composition skills, Lagrimas is equally proficient in other instruments such as the vibraphone, piano, guitar and ukulele. www.abelagrimasjr.com
Chizuko Endo, wife of Kenny Endo, is an accomplished taiko player. She is the Managing Director of Taiko Center of the Pacific, which she and Kenny Endo established in 1994. TCP offers classes to people of all ages and abilities. Since its inception, thousands of children and adults have studied kumidaiko, or ensemble drumming, at Taiko Center of the Pacific.
