Kellye Gray Jazztet with Anton Schwartz
With her renowned, brilliant use of voice as instrument, jazz singer Kellye Gray has entertained dignitaries and heads-of-state, and shared stages with an impressive constellation of international jazz, blues and R&B stars in a career spanning twenty years. The San Francisco Examiner called her "a musically most imaginative tour de force." Described as "stunning scat singing, instrumental simulations and dark-toned balladry" by the Los Angeles Times, Gray creatively uses her voice as part of the ensemble. JazzTimes magazine calls her " an impressive, indeed frighteningly vast talent."
Of her many remarkable qualities, perhaps the most striking is the sheer power of her performance energy and how completely she puts herself on the line when she interprets a song. The results are stunning. She draws on a wide repertoire and vocabulary from both jazz and popular music, always carving her interpretations and improvisations with fearless creativity.
"Think of a layer cake with a dense Carmen McRae center, iced with swoops, dollops and occasionally wide swatches of Nancy Wilson and Billie Holiday, then dotted with Etta James bluesiness and Tina Turner wail. Gray's is an impressive, indeed frighteningly vast talent."
Christopher Loudon, Jazz Times
Joining Kellye will be the amazingly talented saxophonist Anton Schwartz.
