Charlottetown: "Exaltation" featuring Sirens and The Atlantic String Machine
Park Royal United Church
Charlottetown, PE

Two of PEI's beloved classical ensembles join forces this January - Sirens and the Atlantic String Machine perform "Exaltation" on Friday, January 22, 7:30pm at Park Royal United Church in Charlottetown.

The powerful, ethereal voices of Sirens come together with the soaring strings of the Atlantic String Machine to proclaim songs of praise. Starting with modern, sacred compositions, and then moving to the rich, sacred tradition of choral music, the performance will culminate with the revered "Stabat Mater" by Pergolesi.

Singing in heavenly harmony, Sirens performs repertoire from the contemporary choral cannon including pieces by Andrea Ramsey, Gyorgy Orban, David L. Brunner, and Moses Hogan. Songs without words awaken the mind and spirit when the Atlantic String Machine performs sacred instrumental pieces and arrangements of Bach, Byrd, Purcell, and Fauré. Together, the ensembles deliver Srul Irving Glick's "Psalm Trilogy", John Rutter's "The Lord Bless You and Keep You", and Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater", featuring members of Sirens as soloists.

Named after the singing femmes fatales of Greek mythology, Sirens is an award-winning women's choral ensemble based out of Charlottetown. Since their formation in November 2012, the group has developed a strong following of supporters and has been lauded for its pure tone quality, sensitive musicality and tight ensemble. Committed to fostering the development of choral music in Prince Edward Island, Sirens produces two full-length concert programs each season while maintaining a busy schedule performing at numerous concerts, workshops, events and fundraisers. This past season, Sirens was featured at the renowned Indian River Festival and the UPEI Recital Series. The recipient of several awards at the local and provincial music festivals, Sirens won the Richard W. Cooke award at the 2015 FCMF National Music Festival, placing first in the choral ensemble class. Earlier in 2015, Sirens was nominated for a Music PEI Award for Achievement in Classical or Jazz.

Since its formation in April 2015, the Atlantic String Machine (ASM) has been taking the Charlottetown classical concert scene by storm. Five professional musicians with experience in performing world-wide came together to present a wide array of music ranging from classical to jazz and pop. During the spring and summer of 2015, ASM performed to a sold out house at the Watermark Theatre in Rustico, as well as an intimate concert at Harrington House in Rice Point. Concerts in the 2015-16 season includes ASM's own concerts, as well as performances with well-known Newfoundland guitarist Duane Andrews, Charlottetown's vocal ensemble Sirens, and Dr. Karem Simon as part of the UPEI Recital Series. In the fall of 2015, ASM was awarded a creation and production grant from the PEI Council of the Arts to facilitate the recording and production of its debut CD.
