Ukiah Symphony presents: Bountiful Music!
Bountiful Music! by Karen Rifkin
Accomplished musicians from near and far will be gathering on a stage at the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah on Sunday, November 8th at 3 p.m. for an afternoon of eclectic sound featuring classical and contemporary compositions performed by orchestra members and friends as a benefit fundraiser for the Ukiah Symphony Association.
Juggling the many hats that he wears and in his capacity as personnel manager for the Ukiah Symphony, cellist Joel Cohen, who will be performing classical and Celtic music with violinist Tammie Dyer, has assembled a varied group of musicians for a program that promises to entertain a wide range of music lovers.
"The symphony needs to raise money; although many member musicians are volunteers and others perform for a minimal fee, the symphony is a money losing venture, something that is customary for rural, nonprofit art organizations. Over the years, musicians have volunteered for fundraisers and this concert will include dedicated symphony members and friends playing to raise much needed financial support for the symphony," says Cohen.
Versatile pianist Elizabeth MacDougall, well-known local performer and teacher, will be playing "Mouvement Perpétuel" composed by Francis Poulenc, a piece used in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Rope," and "Berceuse," a Frédérick Chopin piano lullaby.
The Brasstastics, a group of Ukiah Symphony brass players that includes Mike Thompson on French horn, Dale Spencer on trumpet, Gary Miller on trumpet, Brynn Stirling (non-symphony member) on trombone and Jacob Turner on tuba will be playing "Zombie Apocalypso" by Zack Smith. This new, rearranged composition was honored as first runner-up in the 2013 Humboldt Brass Composition Competition and includes a festive calypso, a bossa nova groove, a tango built over a pulsating tuba and a paso doble featuring a trumpet. Their second piece will be "Vuelta del Fuego," "Ride of Fire," by Kevin McKee, inspired by the composer's love of "the Mexican 'Zorro' sound that mixes over-the-top romance with unabashed flair and swagger."
Professional musician Dennie Mehocich, a regular performer with the Ukiah Symphony, has been teaching violin in San Rafael since 1981. Accompanied by pianist Paul Shrage, she and some of her Bay Area students will be performing Joseph Haydn's Piano Concerto #3.
Board president Jean Stirling explains the need for a fundraiser. "The association has had a very small but supportive group of long-term sponsors and loyal patrons. We pay up to $3,000 per concert to rent the venue at the college and to use a variety of their equipment including risers, a grand piano, the shell to cover the musicians, music stands and custodial help.
"We are only one genre catering to the multifaceted tastes of our community; most of our patrons are retired and they comprise a small number of people dedicated to classical music. We are committed in continuing to bring high quality musical performance to the area."
The performance on Sunday, November 8th, at 3 p.m. will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah on the corner of Dora and Perkins Streets. Tickets are $25 for adults; $20 for seniors; $5 for children and students with ASB cards; and $35 for family tickets (2 adults and 1-3 children). Tickets are available at Mendocino Book Company, 102 South School Street, Ukiah or at www.ukiahsymphony.org. For questions call 707 462-0236.
