Mus(e)cology: Recycled, Reused, and Repurposed Music - Sunday
The San Francisco Bay Area Chamber Choir, led by music director Anthony Pasqua, performs music that was created by one composer, then borrowed, recomposed, or repurposed others, mostly (but not entirely) in the Renaissance. This was not plagiarismrather it is most often a way one composer honors another.

The centerpiece of the program is a five-voice "parody" mass by Johannes Eccard (1553-1611). The music is based onor is a "parody" or "imitation" ofa chanson by Orlande de Lassus (aka Orlando di Lasso, ~1530-1594), one of Eccard's teachers. We'll first sing Lassus's "Mon coeur se recommande a vous," then perform several movements from Eccard's Missa "Mon coeur se recommande a vous" to show how Eccard reworks Lassus's music to suit the mass text.

Other pieces on the program include:

= "Innsbruck ich muss dich lassen" by Heinrich Isaac (14501517), which J.S. Bach reworked as a Lutheran chorale; Issac also reworked the melody in his own Missa Carminum.

= The traditional Irish tune "Sally Gardens," paired with the Kyrie from the Missa Carminum Brevis by contemporary American composer Paul Chihara (b. 1938).

= Two secular madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) that were reused with sacred texts (contracfacta) added by Aquilino Coppini (d. 1629), an acquaintance of Monteverdi.

= "Vita de la mia vita" by contemporary American composer William Hawley (b. 1950).

= Questa dolce sirena" by Giovanni Giacomo Gastoldi (~1554-1609) paired with My Bonny Lass She Smileth" by Thomas Morley (~1557-1602) .
