Christmas in Scotland - Lincolnton
Jamie Laval's Christmas in Scotland captures the beauty and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands during the holidays, weaving a tapestry of music, dance, poetry, and stories that hearken back to the ancient Celtic celebrations associated with the Winter Solstice and Christmas. An entertaining and thought-provoking family holiday experience.

Headlining the show is Tryon-based violinist, guitarist, and storyteller Jamie Laval. In 2002 Laval won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship and has performed for Her Majesty The Queen. Laval's recent album Murmurs and Drones won the popular vote for "Best World Traditional Album" in the 2012 Independent Music Awards.

Joining Laval onstage are: Rosalind Buda (Asheville), bagpipes, bombard, bassoon, poetry reading; brothers David and Michael McLeod (Greenwood, SC), Highland bagpipes and Irish whistle; Kelly Brzozowski (Atlanta), Celtic harp; Ana Carolina Scott, 18-year old vocalist from Charlotte; The Glencoe School of Highland Dance (Atlanta).

Celtic music has been wrought for centuries by crofters, fishermen, craftswomen, simple folk whose daily existence was steeped in the sounds and sensations of the natural world. It is a musical language that bears the palpable mark of earthen grit.

A beautiful and remarkable thing happens as Celtic music is passed down through the ages: it becomes imbued with the sentiments of the culture that crafted it, as each successive generation adds something of its own experience to the music before passing it along to the next. This music is not born of the lofty concert hall, nor the din of inner city. It seems, rather, to seep from a soggy peat bog, tremble among papery leaves, prance in a crystalline night sky waiting for someone to join in with fiddle and bow.
