Jerusalem
2003, dir. James Fotopoulos

The first in a series of videos exploring inter-dimensional travel, Jerusalem plays like a mysterious tape salvaged from a thrift store.  In place of opening credits, viewers are treated to an overture of voices emerging from visual static, recounting frightening alien encounters, strange dreams, and emotional traumas.  Jerusalem's action centers around a group of actors in an empty apartment, their behavior and rituals attenuated to the point of becoming a curious choreography of frozen poses. In-camera editing, analog solarization techniques, and the unique sound properties of VHS betray Fotopoulos's attention to the qualities of this format, showcasing artists' continued innovation and utilization of VHS decades after its cultural peak.

Director James Fotopoulos will be joined by Rebecca Cleman, the Distribution Director of Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), for a pre-screening dialogue.
