As part of the continuing RMI Concert Series, "The Platters Revue, featuring the legendary Monroe Powell" will perform at Aliante Station Casino & Hotel on Sunday, April 29. Enjoy an evening of quality entertainment, dancing and cocktails in the state-of-the-art Access Showroom.
Winner of 16 Grammy Awards, The Platters were the first rock 'n roll group to have a Top 10 album in America. They were also the only act to have three songs included on the "American Graffiti" soundtrack that sparked an oldies revival in the 1970s: "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Great Pretender," and "Only You."
Monroe Powell, an opera-trained virtuoso, holds the distinction of being the lead singer of The Platters longer than any other legitimate member. He began his career with The Dominos and The Ink Spots, and, in 1970, found a permanent home with The Platters. On stage, his voice is characterized by swelling crescendos, whispers and sensual pauses in a magnificent and unique style. There is no doubt music lovers are overwhelmed by his voice, debonair charm and warm sense of humor.
In 1956, The Platters appeared in the first major motion picture based around rock 'n roll, "Rock Around the Clock," performing their hits "Only You" and "The Great Pretender." Their unique vocal style touched a nerve in the music-buying public, and a string of hit singles followed, including two more Top 100 #1 hits, one Hot 100 #1 hit, and more modest hits such as "I'm Sorry" (#11),"He's Mine" (#23), "Enchanted" (#12) and "The Magic Touch" (#4).
The Platters then hit upon the successful formula of updating older standards, such as "My Prayer," Twilight Time," "Harbor Lights," "To Each His Own," "If I Didn't Care," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in its inaugural year of 1998.
All shows begin at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. The cover charge (cash and credit) for each show is $15 (tax inclusive) at the door. Make your reservation by going online to www.brownpapertickets.com and search "RMI Concert Series." All RMI property residents are invited to bring guests. All shows are open to the public.
