Bee Here Now
Alameda Natural Grocery sponsors this special screening of "Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us?"
There is an alarming and mysterious global phenomenon called Colony Collapse DIsorder, in which honeybees vanish from their hives, never to return. Bees are an absolutely essential link in our food chain and their absence poses one of the most serious global food crises we face. Filmmaker Taggart Siegel set out to discover the cause, and more importantly, the solutions to Colony Collapse Disorder in his new documentary, Queen of the Sun: What Are the Bees Telling Us? Using stunning visuals, and following the voices and visions of beekeepers, philosophers and scientists from around the globe, Siegel weaves an alarming yet ultimately uplifting narrative exploring the complex issues that threaten the existence of honeybees whose survival is deeply linked to our own. Queen of the Sun is an important and informative film that illuminates our historic relationship with honeybees and how the solution lies in our renewing a culture that is in balance with the natural world. It is a must-see film, and one Roger Ebert called, "A remarkable documentary that's also one of the most beautiful nature films I've seen."
This screening also serves as the launch to Alameda Natural Grocery's own bee program. The Marketplace roof will be home to several hives of honeybees that will be serviced and harvested by a local beekeeper, with the honey produced available for sale in the store. Hives will also be available to purchase, and neighbors are encouraged to host one in their yard.
Tickets are available on a sliding scale of $5 - $15 with proceeds benefiting the Alameda County Beekeepers Association.
