Music Tracks: Shoot Out the Lights
performing Richard & Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
On March 15, 1982, Richard and Linda Thompson released what was to be their final album together: "Shoot Out the Lights." Dubbed a "harrowing masterpiece" by one critic, the album is equal parts love, doubt, bitterness, heartfelt plea, and sheer life-force fitting material for a duo whose marriage was rapidly disintegrating at the time of the album's release and their subsequent tour. With Linda's mesmerizing vocal performances and Richard's alternately searing and soothing guitar work, it remains a favorite among Thompson fans.
Flash forward thirty years to Cold Spring, NY, where five devotees have been rehearsing the album, which Rolling Stone called "absolutely perfect," in its entirety. Shoot Out the Lights is Rick Gedney, John McGrath, Margaret Vetare, Nick Poholchuk, and John Rice. Special guests open the show with a choice selection of Richard Thompson songs.
