Event
From the Back of the Room
MARCH 6 through 8, TUESDAY through THURSDAY AT 7 and 9PM Seattle Premiere! Sponsored by Easy Street Records From the Back of the Room (Amy Oden, 2011, USA, Blu-ray, 102 min) Deconstructing myths of the Utopian quality of alternative cultures, From the Back of the Room confronts punk patriarchy. With first hand testimonies from Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, comic-book artist Cristy Road, Slug and Lettuce zinester Chris Boarts-Larson and Slade from Tribe 8, the film addresses issues of gender, race, class and sexuality within DIY punk. While cataloguing the lineage of the femme-punk movement, the film serves as more than a history lesson; it's the beginning of a larger discussion on how these issues manifest today.
"Oden unravels the illusion that the '90s riot-grrrl movement was a be-all-end-all moment for women in punk without discrediting its definitive, unmatched impact. She provides an essential voice on not just femme-punk's lineage but rock history in general with unprecedented research and an uncompromising argument." Liz Pelly, The Boston Pheonix
