THE BABY
Written and Directed by Dan Spurgeon Adapted from the screenplay by Abe Polsky Oct 15 - Nov 1
The 1970s cult movie - live on stage!
The Canadian premiere of THE BABY promises to be unlike anything seen before on Toronto stages! Written and directed by Dan Spurgeon (LA Weekly Theatre Award winner, Best Director, 2012) and adapted from Abe Polsky's screenplay of the 1973 grindhouse classic, THE BABY won "Best of Hollywood Fringe" and "Top 10 LA Theatre Production" honours in 2013.
"Utterly sick sh*t, and hysterical throughout!" John Skipp, Fangoria
THE BABY follows social worker Ann Gentry as she finds herself with a very unusual case - the Wadsworth family, whose youngest member, Baby, is an adult man who sleeps in a crib and acts like an infant. Is Ann on the case to help the disabled Baby escape his abusive mother and sisters, or is her interest in him more "special"? Part bizarre love story, part twisted fairy tale, part mystery thriller and all outrageous and offensive, the 70s cult film comes to the stage with a story so strange and shocking, you won't believe it's happening right in front of you!
"Gleefully perverse with a delicious campiness!" Paul Birchall, LA Weekly
Inspiration for this play comes via the schlocky camp sensibilities of the films of John Waters (Pink Flamingos; Female Trouble), Russ Meyer (Beyond the Valley of the Dolls; Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!), and Herschell Gordon Lewis (2000 Maniacs; The Gruesome Twosome) - so any fans of those kinds of "midnight movies" should find plenty to like about THE BABY!
"That was f*ckin' funny!" Ron Jeremy, adult film legend
THE BABY stars Frank Blocker (NY Drama Desk Award nominee, Best Solo Performance, 2009) reprising his celebrated performance as Mama Wadsworth; Jeanie Calleja (4-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee) as seeming do-gooder Ann Gentry; Claire Burns (writer/director, Human Furniture) and Alicia Richardson (US regional theatre, Fulbright Scholar) as Wadsworth daughters Germaine and Alba; and Jeff Dingle (Best of Toronto Fringe Kids winner, 2015) as Baby, the adult son who wears a diaper and sleeps in a crib.
Also featured are Daniel Cristofori (Murdoch Mysteries, Saving Hope), Alex Dault (My Theatre Award for Emerging Artist, 2012), Olivia Marshman (2015 Stratford Festival's Eigengrau), Nicholas Porteous (2-time NOW Magazine Toronto Fringe Award winner, Best Ensemble), Paul Rivers (Meza, Murdoch Mysteries, Suits), and Candi Zell (Regression, starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson).
NOTE: Due to nudity, language, drug references, other adult themes, and overall perversity, THE BABY is not appropriate for children or uptight squares, man!
