A TOAST to TWO CITIES: CBA Chorus & NYC Bar Chorus

The Chicago Bar Association Chorus is delighted to welcome its Big Apple counterpart, the New York City Bar Chorus, as these "legal choirs" complete their two-city exchange with a concert featuring American music in its many forms, including folk, spiritual, musical theater, jazz and gospel.  The two choruses will perform both individually and together, combining forces on four songs.  Please join us for this unique collaboration between two historic bar associations.

The Chicago Bar Association Chorus is comprised mainly of members from Chicago's legal community.  Under the direction of Rebecca Patterson, the chorus has collaborated with the Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra in performing such major works as Mendelssohn's Elijah, Haydn's Creation and Orff's Carmina Burana.  The chorus' a cappella repertoire ranges from Rachmaninoff to Moses Hogan.  Last season, the CBA Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, in partnership with the Elgin Master Chorale, performed "Something Wonderful", a celebration of the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, at Orchestra Hall/Symphony Center in Chicago.

The chorus also performs at special events, including a concert in February 2013 at the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois entitled "Lincoln and His America:  A Musical Celebration".  In March 2014, the CBA Chorus joined the New York City Bar Chorus for a program of popular American songs at the historic House of the New York City Bar Association.  The CBA Chorus is looking forward to its second performance in collaboration with the New York City Bar Chorus.  Visit the CBA Chorus' website at http://www.chicagobar.org/chorus.

CBA Chorus Director Rebecca Patterson brings more than thirty years of professional experience to her work with the Chicago Bar Association Chorus.  As a soprano soloist, she has appeared with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Music of the Baroque, and regional orchestras.  In operatic performances she has portrayed such diverse characters as Lauretta in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, Musetta in La Bohème, and Amahl in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors.
As a choral musician, Rebecca has experience as both singer and conductor.  As a chorister she sang with The Chicago Symphony Chorus under Margaret Hillis and the Grant Park Festival Chorus.  In 2006 Rebecca led the CBA Chorus in rehearsals for its performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9at Navy Pier. Since then, she has prepared the chorus for performances of Fauré's Requiem, Vivaldi's Gloria, Mendelssohn's Elijah, Haydn's Creation, Poulenc's Gloria, Orff's Carmina Burana and Bruckner's Te Deum.

The New York City Bar Chorus recently began its twenty-third season as a goodwill ambassador of the New York City Bar.  Since 1993, the NYCBC has staged more than 250 concerts at senior residences, homeless shelters, nursing homes, AIDS and cancer patient residences, and pediatric and rehab facilities, and has been honored by The Hundred Year Association of New York and NY1 News for its community service.  The NYCBC's leaders and members are all legal professionals who volunteer their time and talents to its "musical pro bono" work.  To serve its diverse audiences, the NYCBC has developed an eclectic repertoire ranging from Gershwin to Lauridsen, pop to gospel, and West Side Story to Pippin and Wicked.

The NYCBC also sings for luminaries of the bench and bar and has appeared on local and national television and public radio.  In addition, the NYCBC has performed with other legal choruses, including the Faculty of Advocates Choir (from Edinburgh, Scotland) and the Vizcaya Bar Chorus (from Bilbao, Spain), and is especially pleased to be collaborating again with the Chicago Bar Association Chorus (which joined NYCBC in New York City for a 2014 concert).  In March 2015, the CBC made its Off-Broadway debut at the renowned New York Theatre Workshop in David Greig's acclaimed play "The Events," which won a "Best of Fringe" award at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Musical Director & Conductor Kathryn E. Schneider of the New York City Bar Chorus has worked professionally as an organist and choral director since her early teens.  While attending Columbia Law School, she served as Assistant University Organist at Columbia's St. Paul's Chapel and was Vocal Director of the Columbia Law Revue shows and cabarets.  In addition to her piano and organ studies, Kathy has done graduate-level coursework in choral conducting at Westminster Choir College and Columbia's Teachers College.

Kathy has been musical director of the New York City Bar Chorus since 1996, after serving as accompanist for the NYCBC's first three seasons. Having sung classical repertoire as a member of the Collegiate Chorale and the Oratorio Society of New York, she currently studies voice privately with acclaimed soprano Harolyn Blackwell. Kathy also sings and plays keyboards for MD Soul, the in-house band at Medidata Solutions, where she is Vice President and Deputy General Counsel.
