Country Joe McDonald's Tribute To Woody Guthrie
Arena Theater Celebrates 75 Years with Country Joe McDonald's Tribute to Woody Guthrie, bringing fabeled performer's contributions to the American social and musical fabric to life.
This is Arena Theater's commemoration of the 75th anniversary of its opening as a movie theater and the 10th anniversary of completing the community restoration of the theater. A benefit celebration on Saturday November 10 will turn the clock back 75 years to the Speakeasy era with Country Joe McDonald performing a tribute to Woody Guthrie.
The celebration will include cocktails, small plates by Lorca, Shannon Hughes Point Arena tapas restaurant, and dessert by Frannys Cup & Saucer of Point Arena. Oz Farm of Manchester and The Record Deli Market & Cafe of Point Arena will donate produce and groceries. Food and drinks will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Country Joe will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $75.00 and are on sale now at The Four-Eyed Frog Bookstore and The Sea Trader, Gualala; The Record Market & Cafe, Point Arena; and Tangents, Ft. Country Joe McDonald's connection to Guthrie is strong. He grew up with Woody Guthrie music in his household, was asked to participate in the National Steinbeck Center and Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibition "This Land Is Your Land: The Life and Legacy of Woody Guthrie." He also was a part of a 1975 Tribute Woody Guthrie concert at the Hollywood Bowl; he was asked to put music to one of the many Woody Guthrie lyrics that had no recorded music. McDonald has produced an album of Woody's son Joady Guthrie singing his own original songs; he recorded his own album titled Thinking Of Woody Guthrie, which Woody's wife Marjorie Guthrie said was one of the finest Woody Guthrie albums ever made. Over the years he has performed his tribute many times in England and in the United States. McDonald says that each time I find something new about Woody and about myself. The audience makes similar discoveries as well.
