THE GRAND PARLOR
Concert Description:
Artifact Dance Project presents an exciting Vaudeville show inspired by the entertainment and culture of the early 1900's.  "The Grand Parlor" is named for the main theatre inside the historical Scottish Rite Cathedral in downtown Tucson, where the ambience in collaboration with the entertainment, is sure to take the audience back to another time in American history.  Co-artistic Directors Ashley Bowman and Claire Hancock will stage several short pieces to a set of clever music, directed and orchestrated by Music Director, Ben Nisbet.  Dance fuses with quirky themes such as juggling, magic tricks, strong men (weight lifting), contortion, clowning and much more.  Short skits such as the story of Faust will be reenacted.  The concert will also feature a "master of ceremonies" danced by company member Cindy Cantos.  She will interact with and guide the audience through a very entertaining, comical and exciting show.  The audience will get a sense of "The Grand Parlor" as traveling group of entertainers, passing through Tucson for one weekend only!

Artifact has chosen some of the most iconic and recognizable pieces of "Classical" and "Classic" music and transformed them into works for a small vaudeville ensemble.  These pieces will retain all of the drama and excitement found in their original forms, with the added element of intimacy and humor that only Vaudeville can provide. Music Director Ben Nisbet has has carefully re-imagined pieces such as Saint-Saens' Danse Macabre and Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville for a group of talented players, many of whom are veterans of Artifact Dance Project.  Reed specialist Derek Granger, bassist Ken Marrs, and percussionist Paul Gibson, all of whom have performed extensively with ADP, will be joined by newcomers Mary Turcotte (piano) and Samantha Bounkeua (violin.)

"The Grand Parlor" is designed to entertain and educate audiences about one of America's most unique decades of performance art in one of our city's most pristine historical sites.  Attendees can enjoy a cocktail from the Scottish Rite Cathedral main lobby to accompany their experience.
