USM Philosophy Symposium Film Series: An Encounter With Simone Weil
Tells the story of French philosopher, activist, and mystic, Simone Weil (1909-1943) -- a woman Albert Camus described as "the only great spirit of our time." On her quest to understand Simone Weil, filmmaker Julia Haslett confronts profound questions of moral responsibility both within her own family and the broader context of 21st-century America. Using Weil's writings and teachings as a framework for her own experience, Haslett creates a moving portrait of an extraordinary young woman whose decision to act on her convictions proved that the quest to live a principled life is a journey we should all consider taking.
Co-Presented by the USM Philosophy Symposium. Film followed by discussion.
