Oregon Mahler Festival
The Inaugural Oregon Mahler Festival: Celebrating the profound and dramatic music of Gustav Mahler.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) Symphony 1 in D Major "Titan"
Composed in 1887-88, Mahler's first symphony is an amazingly auspicious piece. In it, we hear the sounds of nature, trumpet calls in the distance, a rustic peasant dance, a funeral march (the tune based on the children's song "Frère Jacques" but in a minor key), the passing of a village Klezmer band, an explosion of demonic energy, and a huge triumphal conclusion. Scored for an orchestra of 100, with ten horns, this symphony has it all.
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) Overture to Tannhäuser
Wagner's 1845 opera Tannhäuser is based on the two German legends of Tannhäuser and the song contest at Wartburg. It is a story of obsession. love,and diving redemption. The overture is often performed outside the opera as a concert piece, with a triumphal ending added.
Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) Songs of a Wayfarer, featuring baritone Kevin Helppie
Written in 1884-5 after an unhappy love affair, these four songs center around the idea of lost love, explore sad dreams, obsession, grief, and regret. Mahler later used two melodies from the songs in his first symphony, and one in his second symphony.
The Oregon Mahler Festival brings together talented musicians from all over the Portland area to perform large scale symphonic music by Mahler. The Festival is sponsored by the Willamette Falls Symphony. This is the inaugural year, and it will continue every summer to perform all of the Mahler symphonies. Founder and Music Director Dr. Mark Perlman leads the orchestra.
A number of conductors tout themselves as "philosophers of the podium", but Mark Perlman really is one - besides his long experience as a conductor, he also has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Arizona, and is Professor of Philosophy at Western Oregon University. He studied conducting at the University of Arizona with Dr. Leonard Pearlman, and has worked with conductors such as Jorma Panula, Markus Lehtinen, Petr Gribanov, Leonid Kochmar, Sian Edwards, Adrian Gnam, Robert Gutter, Oleg Proskurnya, Alexander Polishchuck, Murry Sidlin, Daniel Lewis, Don Thulean, and John Farrer. He has conducted orchestras in the Portland area, across the U.S., as well as internationally in Germany, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria. He was featured on Romanian television for his September 11, 2006 concert in honor of victims of terrorism. In addition to conducting the Willamette Falls Symphony since 2001, he is currently the Conductor of the Tualatin Valley Symphony and the Associate Conductor for the Hillsboro Symphony.
Baritone Kevin Helppie maintains an active performing career, including recitals, oratorios, operas, and popular styles. Dr. Helppie, a professor at Western Oregon University, enjoys the full spectrum of solo and ensemble singing. As a soloist he has sung with the Nashville Symphony, Jacksonville Florida Symphony, Seattle Philharmonic, Bay Chorus of Houston, Louisville Bach Society, Detroit Concert Choir, Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Seattle, Seattle Opera, Seattle Choral Company, Choir of the Sound, City Cantabile Choir, Festival Chorale Oregon, Mount Angel Abbey and Seattle Pro Musica. Dr. Helppie has received fellowships to perform with renowned groups such as the Robert Shaw Festival Singers in their tour of France and their historic Brahm's Requiem and the Beethoven Missa Solemnis performances for the centennial of Carnegie Hall. Dr. Helppie was also granted an Artist Fellowship to perform with the Bach Aria Group in New York.
