Following the phenomenal success of Battleship Potemkin, Eisenstein was commissioned to
produce a film to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Revolution. The result was a dizzying,
kaleidoscopic evocation of the Revolution punctuated with hallucinatory visuals and wild abstractions
that is one of the few works to capture the energy and excitement of a revolution. Initially withheld from
release for being "artistically indulgent and unnecessarily indirect," October was the beginning of the
battles with government censors that would plague him the rest of his life. (Russia, 1928, 103 min, b/w, 35mm
