Urubanda: Uruguayan Candombe & Murga rhythms
Edgardo Cambon, lead vocals & percussion; Walter Gonzalez, tambor piano; Kelly Ralston, tambor chico; Jorge Pomar, bass; Marco Diaz, piano and trumpet; Lichi Fuentes, vocals; Evan Francis, saxes. Plus special surprise guests.
Urubanda was founded in 2008 by renowned Uruguayan percussionists Edgardo Cambon and Walter Gonzalez with the sole intent of having fun playing mostly the rare and very danceable Uruguayan rhythms "Candombe" and "Murga". Urubanda showcased their music at venues including Yoshis (Oakland & San Francisco), Yerba Buena Gardens, The San Jose Jazz Festival and many local salsa clubs.
The Candombe is the main Afro-Uruguayan form of music. Candombe represents to Uruguayans what Rumba is to Cubans, Samba to Brazilians, Cumbia to Colombians, etc.
The repertoire consists of traditional popular songs by Uruguayan composers such as Rubén Rada, Roberto Darvin, Jaime Roos, Los Olimareños, Alfredo Zitarrosa and more. Edgardo, Walter, and the members of Urubanda bring their 30 years plus musical experiences in the mix, creating a magnetic communion between the Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Uruguayan sounds.
