Sing-It-Yourself Messiah
The Maui Choral Arts Association's annual Sing-It-Yourself Messiah is the perfect way to jump-start your holiday season! Come join in the music and singing on Sunday, November 27, 4:00 p.m. at Kihei Baptist Chapel, 1655 South Kihei Road at Welakahao Road in Kihei. This community singing event, now in its 11th year, is the only event of its kind on Maui and every year residents and visitors alike participate in this unique singing opportunity.
Sing-It-Yourself Messiah opens Maui Choral Arts Association ninth season, Thank You for the Music, and features Artistic Director, Celia Canty, conducting an instrumental ensemble, Maui soloists including Lisa Paulson, Karyn Sarring, and Robert E. Wills singing the arias, and the entire audience on the choruses of the Christmas portion from George Frederic Handel's masterpiece, Messiah. Music scores are available at the door.
The exhilarating experience of singing the "Hallelujah Chorus" with 350-450 other singers, all accompanied by a Baroque chamber ensemble is beyond compare when it comes to participating in the spirit of the holidays. Our petite orchestra features fine instrumentalists from Maui, the Big Island, and Oahu and includes MCAA's accompanist, Angie Carr, playing harpsichord. This annual event always concludes with traditional carols that the entire audience may join in singing while accompanied by the petite orchestra.
If you wish to get a head start on singing the choruses, MCAA opens up its Concert Chorus rehearsals ahead of the event to all who wish to practice. This year MCAA offer one preparatory Messiah rehearsal for all interested singers from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22 (UPDATE: the Tue Nov 8 and Nov 15 community rehearsals have been cancelled). This rehearsal will be held at Iao Congregational Church, 2371 West Vineyard Street, Wailuku. Lending music scores will be available. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so you have time to borrow a score and familiarize yourself with the facility. There is no charge for these rehearsals but your generous donations are always welcome and help tremendously with MCAA's ability to bring great music to the community.
