8th Annual Accordion Noir Festival :: Davy Jones' Dance Hall
After an absence of three years, festival co-founder Geoff Berner returns with the Vancouver release of his most compelling album to date "We Are Going to Bremen to Be Musicians". The album title is a reference to an old German folk tale about elderly farm animals threatened with death, who run away from their masters in the hope of achieving freedom and becoming Town Musicians. It's an absurd tale of irrational hope and optimism in the face of horror, and that's where the story connects with the songs on the album. "I would describe the record as a compendium of strategies against despair," says Berner. Produced by Josh Dolgin, aka Socalled from Montreal, the album is being released on Oriente Records in Europe. In Canada the release of "Bremen" is part of the exciting roll-out of Coax Records' new roster of artists for both its recorded music arm and booking agency.
Featured 'tweener' performer and host for the evening, Ana Bonbon will bump and grind her way through the event with sultry songs, and risqué tales of her adventures as a performer and event producer in London England over the past five years.
All the way from Halifax and scallywags of the highest order, Kate and Rich will reel you in with their animated stage presence and playful crowd engagement, and then they will blow you away with the full-band New Orleans Klezmer Dance Party sound that comes out of their two instruments. The kooky duo are favourites in Ontario and the Maritime where they tour by bicycle as much as possible, cycling thousands of kilometers a year. This will be their first ever visit to the West Coast.
From the Pacific Coast, the eight-piece, world-beat powerhouse Compassion Gorilla of Victoria will liberate feet and catapult audiences into whole-hearted outlandish dance entrancement. Infused with elements of Latin & African music, Compassion Gorilla combines tight instrumental arrangements with songs and story telling. With the beguiling siren Julie Gennai on accordion, the result is a high-energy show that leaves the audience begging for more.
