8th Annual Accordion Noir Festival :: Deep Squeeze
Wendy McNeill, originally from the Prairies of Canada, has been performing, living, and travelling throughout Europe for ten years. She has built up a large fan base there. The duet recording of her song "Such a Common Bird" with Ane Brun went platinum in Scandinavia and continues to gain fans worldwide. Her new album One Colour More contains stories of people who are struggling to find a home or fit into a new land. The songs are told with a splash of magic realism, giving them extra 'colour' (thus the album title) and often an unexpected outcome. Her album release at this year's festival will be her first Vancouver appearance in four years.
Adding to the overall luminosity of the evening is Rattletrap Ruckus, a band that occupies the unusual niche of silent movie and circus orchestra. In-demand accordion front-man Lucas Hicks (of The Gallus Brothers) conducts this crackerjack quartet through original tunes that draw from ragtime, waltz, tango, paso dobles, klezmer, polka and norteƱo. Local cabaret artists will pair with this rollicking musical outfit for a sensory extravaganza.
An illustrious combination of sight and sound intertwine to make up Svetka and the Raven, with accordionist, harpist and vocalist Julie Gennai and shadow projectionist, fine-artist and musician Charlie Walker. With whimsical sights, tales and melodies, these two adventurists trespass the borders of auditory and visual to enter the realm of dreams. Julie has worked for three consecutive summers with the infamous east coast circus-theatre company Bread and Puppet as a puppeteer, musician and stilt-walker.
The Wayward Hearts play original music featuring banjo, violin and electric accordion. The Waywards are inspired by fine hats, Old Testament exuberance, Gothic Americana, Alphonse Mucha, tambourines, mountain music, worn-out boots, causing a ruckus and telling a good story about it. Some more noteworthy musical influences include Junior Kimbrough, 16 Horsepower, Neil Young, Nick Cave, Gram Parsons, Ryan Adams, The Rolling Stones, Tom Waits, and Lucinda Williams. The band consist of Bradley Damsgaard on lead vocals, guitar and banjo, Shiloh Lindsey on vocals, Emily Helsdon on violin, Jim Favaro on electric accordion, Scott Paulley on bass and Kirk Douglas on the drums. The band traveled south to LA in July 2014 where they played a raucous set at the legendary Whisky A GOGO!
Haisla Collins, a gifted expressionist painter, and blues singer in her own right, will host the event and provide her own unique perspective on accordions and what it means to be human.
