SoundLab (www.arup.com/Services/Acoustic_Consulting.aspx/) is an immersive, full-sphere ambisonics listening chamber designed by the acoustic group at ARUP that recreates an sonic environment true to real life situations. On September 23, sound artists HoraFlora & Shane Myrbeck explore the depths of perception by developing fictionalized sonic environments using experimental techniques to create, manipulate and spatialize sound. SoundLab also recreates excerpts of the stunning performances at Battery Townsley by Gregg Kowalsky, and Jacob Felix Heule & Kanoko Nishi from last season's Soundwave ((4)). On September 24, sound artist [ruidobello] creates a special ambisonic composition featuring field recordings of bees while SoundLab recreates excerpts of the stunning performances at Battery Townsley by Danny Paul Grody, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church by Myrmyr and 20 vocalists and musicians from last season's Soundwave ((4)).
GREGG KOWALSKY http://greggkowalsky.net/ "Armed with an assortment of boom-boxes and tape-recorders, Oakland-based sound artist Gregg Kowalsky orchestrated elegant, almost hypnotic, loops that reverberated viscerally around the audience, who were seated in neat rows of three down the center of the tunnel." - KQED Arts
JACOB FELIX HEULE http://www.heule.us/ KANOKO NISHI http://www.myspace.com/kanokonishi "Jacob Felix Heule and Kanoko Nishi stormed the tunnel with an incredibly cinematic improvisational duet; Heule worked on an improvised drum kit and Nishi on the koto, a Japanese zither." - KQED Arts
DANNY PAUL GRODY http://dannypaulgrody.com/ "Fog billowed around San Francisco guitarist Danny Paul Grody, who sat on a perch looking over the Pacifi c. As Grody mixed and re-layered loops of feedback alternately from electric and acoustic guitars, swallows darted in and out of the battery circling the audience in such perfect sync with the music it was as if Grody had choreographed their movements." - KQED Arts
MYRMYR http://www.myrmyr.net/ "...you should consider St. Mark's [Lutheran Church] not only part of the band, but its throat. Myrmyr perform[s] "haunting Baltic folkinspired chamber sounds," with bells, percussion, and other instruments chosen for their long reverberations, [and other] players and singers grouped around the church, sometimes concealed." - SF Weekly
