Backbone Benefit with Chris Chandler, Paul Benoit, Vishal Nagar, Ela Lamblin and more at the Chapel Performance Space
Don't miss an amazing evening of collaborative performance to benefit the Backbone Campaign. Poet-bard Chris Chandler will partner with Seattle songster Paul Benoit, instrument inventor-performer Ela Lamblin will be accompanied by percussionist Bill Moyer, and brother Vishal and Ujwal Nagar will give a mind-boggling Classical Indian tabla and vocal. (This will be Ujwal's first US performance.)
Performer bios:
Chris Chandler: "Chris Chandler is one of the most radically Creative acts on the coffee house Circuit." - The Boston Herald. This is the third year that the Backbone Campaign has brought Chris to the Seattle area to share his uniquely artful collage style performance that combines music, poetry, video weaving stories about the essence of our country and these turbulent times.
Paul Benoit: "Lyrics are rich with imagery. Rhymes are fresh, lead lines are mellow and the whole package is solidly grooving and easy on the ears..." - Top DIY Picks, Performing Songwriter. From his work with the Hanuman Collective, to Laura Love or Reggie Garret Paul's travels and vast performance experience ensure that this new collaboration with Chris will be something to sink one's teeth into.
Vishal Nagar: "He has magic in his hands" - Hindustan Times
Vishal is one of world's great up-and-coming percussionists. Vishal has been praised in the Indian press for his unique combination of melodic Tabla sound production with masterful command of rhythm. US audiences are continually awed by his skill and charmed by his performance presence. Being equally acclaimed for his performances as an accompanist of dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists, he has also been praised by the press and connoisseurs for his performances as a soloist.
Ujwal Nagar: Brother of tabla virtuoso Vishal Nagar and second son of famous classical dancer and vocalist Urmila Nagar, Ujwal's stunning vocal talent should come as no surprise. That said you will be amazed at this young musician's masterly and hauntingly beautiful voice. Whether slowly exploring a raag or aggressively exploring the vocal gymnastics of what is called "Sargam" Ujwal will thrill Seattlites as he has audiences in India, Italy, and Thailand. This will be his debut US performance!
Ela Lamblin: Ela moved to Seattle in 1994, where he began working with the physical theater ensemble, UMO, providing original scores that he played on his unique instruments, collaborating on performance pieces, and creating musical sets for shows. In 1996 Ela founded the Lela Performance Group (now Lelavision) with long-time collaborator Leah Mann and has since opened Lela Studio. The name of the group is more than a play on the names of the founders; derived from two Sanskrit terms meaning "creation" and "creative spark", with inferences to "play," it denotes the spirit of the performance group.
Bill Moyer: Executive Director of the Backbone Campaign does very little performing these days, but is pleased and h
