RFF - "Shot in the Hood w/Bullet Full of Knowledge, Streets to Suites & The Maggot"
Shot in the Hood - 50 minutes
Shot in the hood, is a documentary film made by Bill Willis. The film is a series of interviews from adults and teenagers who live in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan. The movie takes a hard look at the recent rise of youth violence and tries to get to the core of some of the causes and more importantly some of the solutions that we as a community can do to stem the violence that is being committed by and against some of our young people. I felt that it was important to get the views from the kids because the violence affects them the most. As twenty veteran of the Boston police department I felt I could do more than locking kids.
Bullet Full of Knowledge - 30 minutes
Based on the true story Bullet Full of Knowledge tells the tragic tale of Devaughn Woods, a young man who at the age of fourteen became victim of gang violence on the streets of Boston, MA, the bullet paralyzed him from the waist down. Spending his life in a wheelchair, he came to realize that Knowledge was riding on the bullet that hit him , making him change his life for the better. Bullet Full of Knowledge chronicles the very day Devaughn was shot telling the story twice. Watch and listen closely.
Street to Suites - 7 minutes
Kareem, a self described hustler, is ambitious and laying the groundwork to build a vast empire. Outfitted in the hustler uniform of Timberlands and a baseball cap, Kareem hits the streets to conduct his business. He exchanges envelopes for packages, and makes several trips to abandoned buildings.Kareem's story unfolds through his interactions with people on the street - neighborhood thugs, teenage girls, a shopkeeper, and an old lady. Through their conversations, a negative perception of Kareem is formed, but this is not accurate. It is only as the entirety of the conversations are revealed that Kareem's true identity is revealed.
The Maggot - 5 minutes
Drug dealers are a cancer. Their thirst for money destroys families, perpetuates crime, and instigates violence. They contribute to the destruction of our young and to the magnification of black self hatred. This film attempts to erode the drug dealer's image. It is the best that I could do in the war against drugs in our community. I am not a social worker. I am a film maker who has chosen to make the film available...free to whomever wants to use it for positive purposes.
