JAZZ IT UP! @ Sorrento Restaurant with Grupo Yuri Jazz
The popular Jazz It Up! monthly jazz and blues music concert experience invites you to enjoy an evening of  unique smooth jazz on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 7pm at the La Famiglia Sorrento Restaurant, located at 631 Central Avenue in Westfield, NJ. Acclaimed jazz and blues music ensembles bring you a monthly listening experience that promises to captivate the audience on the last Wednesday of each month at this intimate venue. Come join this month's Jazz It Up! music concert artists, Grupo Yuri Jazz for a special evening of unique smooth and Latin jazz and good food.                                                       Grupo Yuri Jazz is five piece musical ensemble performing an array of diverse styles from World Beat, Latin and Jazz flavors. The group is led by violinist Yuri Turchyn whose compositions are featured by the excellent musicianship of the band. The band has performed at jazz festivals throughout New Jersey and such luminary clubs as Trumpets and the Shanghai Jazz Club. Grupo Yuri Jazz was originally organized in 1996 and performed extensively through the year 2000. In 2005, Yuri decided to re-form the group with its present line-up after a five year hiatus. With new material and a zest for live performance, the band has been on a mission to expand its sound and present it to diverse audiences. Their passionate and superbly energetic original music was a hit with the audience at their concert appearance at the South Orange Performing Arts Center. Other recent venues where the band has performed to great audience enthusiasm include The Arts Factory in Bayonne, NJ; The Black River Music and Arts Festival in Chester, NJ; NJPAC Sounds of The City in Newark, NJ; Shanghai Jazz Club in Madison; The Dancing Goat in South Orange, NJ; Riverfest Jazz and Blues Festival in Red Bank, NJ; Tim McLoone's Supper Club in Asbury Park; The Asbury Park Jazz Festival; Chico's Jazz Club in Asbury Park and Trumpets in Montclair. The group's founder, writer and jazz violinist Yuri Turchyn, has had a highly visible career as a featured premier performer. Robert Santelli (The Asbury Park Press) wrote "Yuri's violin style and execution were tantamount to ground-breaking innovations in music." Yuri was a founding member of the music group Kinderhook, which took the tri-state music scene to new horizons. Mr. Turchyn, a seasoned studio session player; has also performed and was interviewed on the Spanish NBC - Telemundo Cablevision network and has produced, engineered and performed on the Teatro Si (the premier Hispanic theatre company in NJ) CD releases along with many of his other musical accomplishments. The present members of Grupo Yuri Jazz are seasoned players from diverse backgrounds. Bassist Jim Grant is known for his groove oriented playing and drummer Al Selert has been a much sought after player in the tri-state area for years. Guitarist Ernie Fortunato is recognized as one of the finest jazz players and percussionist Stacy Grant has a keenly developed sense of rhythm from his years as a member of M'Zume, a drum oriented samba group. Violinist Yuri Turchyn has synthesized the diversity of these musicians into a fine ensemble; a finality of a long sought musical journey. Grupo Yuri Jazz is where sophisticated music is headed in the age of mass media. Their melodic and rhythmic sound defies genre labeling. Rather than putting them in a category box, all one has to do is listen and be seduced by the music. Grupo Yuri Jazz is the sound for 21st Century.   The staff at La Famiglia Sorrento Restaurant, a long established Westfield eatery and home of the original tomato pie since 1870, welcomes you to this special monthly event where you and your entire family can enjoy entrees from a pizza pie to a full course Italian meal. Seating and food service starts at 6pm and continues during the concert from 7pm to 9pm. BYOB is welcome.
