NEWPORT ARBORETUM WEEK: Olmsted & America's Urban Parks
6:00 PM Reception / 7:00 PM Movie Screening. $20/person. Proceeds help support the free children's movie event.

Join The Newport Tree Society and friends as we celebrate the launch of The Newport Arboretum with the Rhode Island premiere of an acclaimed documentary on America's first father of park and landscape design.

Olmsted and America's Urban Parks, a one-hour documentary, examines the formation of America's first great city parks in the late 19th century through the enigmatic eyes of Frederick Law Olmsted (18221903), visionary urban planner and landscape architect.

Throughout his working life, Olmsted and his firm carried out over 500 commissions, nearly 100 of which were public parks. With incredible foresight that spanned centuries, Olmsted brought nourishing green spaces to New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Louisville, and dozens of other U.S. cities.

Here in Newport, Olmsted and his firm left an indelible mark on a multitude of well-known landscapes including Rough Point, Ocean Drive, Beacon Hill House, The Harold Brown Villa, The New York Yacht Club, Hammersmith Farm, Wildacre, Miantonomi Park and Morton Park, among others.

"I have all my life been considering distant effects and sacrificing immediate success and applause to that of the future."  Frederick Law Olmsted

We, too, wish to shape a brighter future for our city by celebrating and regenerating our magnificent urban forest  please join us in support of this effort.
