Join the Valley Bikery as we spend this year's summer solstice embarking upon an overnight bike-camping adventure in the nearby Santa Monica Mountains!
Inspired by Swift Industries' "Swift Campout" initiative, we have decided to participate by putting together a local event to bring friends and neighbors together to explore and enjoy the outdoors on their bicycles.
The solstice bike campout will happen the weekend of June 20-21, 2015. On the morning of Saturday, June 20 we will meet in the West Valley and then begin the ride to our private campsite; along the way we'll stop for lunch around the halfway point. At the campsite, everyone will be free to hang out and have fun! In the evening we will cook dinner together and then have a campfire. Sunday morning, June 21, we will have breakfast, then pack up our camp and ride back to the start.
THIS IS A MILDLY STRENUOUS TRIP THAT INVOLVES RIDING A LOADED BIKE 30 MILES WITH A LITTLE OVER 1500' OF CLIMBING (EACH WAY). Please be sure that this activity is within your fitness level and that you are physically able to complete the ride. We will be riding at a medium/conversational pace--not a race, but not a beach cruise (13-18 mph).
PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THIS IS A *SELF-SUPPORTED* RIDE. This means that each rider/camper will be responsible for supplying and carrying their own camping gear. Racks & panniers tend to be the easiest way to transport stuff on a bicycle. However, new rackless storage options now exist (e.g. frame bags and special oversized handlebar/saddle bags) that are useful to those who have bikes without mounting points or those who want the most lightweight setup. At the very least, each person will be expected to bring a sleep system (sleeping bag or quilt & sleeping pad), shelter (tent, tarp, bivy, or ground cloth), and food (dinner & breakfast). A camping stove is recommended but not absolutely necessary.
A more detailed packing list, route map, directions/que sheet, and itinerary will be emailed to each ticket holder.
**This event will be limited to 35 riders maximum, and all riders must be 18 years old or over. (ID will be required at the start for verification)**
