BIG RIVER
BIG RIVER (Music & Lyrics by Roger Miller, Book by William Hauptman) runs April 8-24, 2011 at the World Trade Center in downtown Portland.
WINNER of 7 Tony Awards including Best Musical, BIG RIVER still stands as a dazzling, heartwarming slice of musical Americana.
Twain's timeless classic sweeps us down the mighty Mississippi as the irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom at the mouth of the Ohio River. Their adventures along the way are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life your favorite characters from the novel-the Widow Douglas and her stern sister, Miss Watson; the uproarious King and Duke, who may or may not be as harmless as they seem; Huck's partner in crime, Tom Sawyer, and their rowdy gang of pals; Huck's drunken father, the sinister Pap Finn; the lovely Mary Jane Wilkes and her trusting family. Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this jaunty journey provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana.
Starring some of Portland's most talented young people working alongside professional actors, BIG RIVER is a must-see theatrical event. Catherine Olson, Chris Porter, Marzell Sampson, and Colin Wood star alongside student actors from across the Portland metro area.
BIG RIVER is directed by the creative team that brought the award-winning, all-student production of LES MISERABLES to the stage in 2008. Paul Angelo (Director) and Andrew Bray (Musical Director) have reunited to work with this cast of young performers and musicians.
BIG RIVER follows the style of Staged! musicals: unfussy sets, onstage musicians, and great stories being told through song.
