Nine-year-old Srulik seeks the kindness of others in his solitary struggle to outlast the Nazi occupation of Poland and keep alive his Jewish faith. The novel by Uri Orlev is based upon a true story. Passing himself off as Jurek, a Christian war orphan, the boy traverses the countryside working as a farmhand. Who will help him survive, and who will betray him? The film offers exceptional performances, arresting cinematography and a transcendent musical score.
