Tony & Janina's American Wedding- International Women's Day- Atlanta Premiere
TONY & JANINA'S AMERICAN WEDDING is a new feature length documentary directed by former Atlanta filmmaker Ruth Leitman (Alma, Lipstick & Dynamite, Wildwood, NJ., Welcome to Anatevka).  This film gets to the heart of the broken, red-tape ridden U.S. immigration system.   After 18 years in America, Tony and Janina Wasilewski's family is torn apart when Janina is deported back to Poland, taking their then 6 year old son Brian with her, and barred from returning for 10 years.  Protagonist Tony is living in limbo between the two countries he loves: Poland where his wife and son reside and the U.S. where he and Janina have spent their entire adult life chasing the American dream, now turned nightmare. Set on the backdrop of the Chicago political scene, and featuring Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez at the heart of the immigration reform movement, this film follows the Wasilewski's 3-year struggle to be reunited, as their Senator Barack Obama rises to the Presidency.  This film raises larger issues of migration, global citizenship and the core meaning of patriotism. With a fresh perspective on the immigration conversation, this film also tells the untold human rights story of post-9/11, that every undocumented immigrant in America faces today, with the power to open the conversation for change.
