Imagine the heaving basslines of drum ânâ bass and breakbeat, the massive beats of old school hip-hop, glitchy tones and sonic tricks of modern electronica/IDM, all mashed up with hip-hop lyrics, cut-up dancehall/ragga vocals, samples of political speeches (from activists like Noam Chomsky, Mumia Abu Jamal, Michael Franti and Martin Luther King) all pumped through a variety of tempos. Such is Bassnectar music, an exotic blend of genre-bending musical styles and emotions, combining the visceral melodic presence of modern listening music, with the force and volume of sound system dancehall devastation. Rooted firmly in political conviction, philosophical intention and backed by a rabid fan base and dedicated following (he was named the âBest Of The Bay 2005â by the San Francisco Bay Guardian), Bassnectar, aka Lorin Ashton, sets a new standard for the possibilities of merging music, art, new media and social activism.
