Biography
Christopher Atzinger has performed in Austria, Germany, England, Italy, France, Spain, Malta, Ireland, Hungary, and Canada in addition to performances throughout the United States highlighted by concerts in New York at Carnegie Hall (Weill), New York University, St. Paul's Chapel, Liederkranz Hall; in Chicago at the Dame Myra Hess Series and Piano Forte Salon Series; and in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and the Phillips Collection. In addition to live performances broadcast on WFMT-Chicago, WJR-Detroit, KPAC-San Antonio, WXEL-West Palm Beach, WUOL-Louisville, WGTE-Toledo, and WFCR-New England, his artistry has been also been heard on Minnesota, Wisconsin and Vermont public radio, and nationally on American Public Media's Performance Today. Mr. Atzinger has performed at the Banff International Keyboard Festival, Brevard Music Festival, Bridge Chamber Music Festival, and the Chautauqua Institution, lectured at the Juilliard School and Berklee College of Music, and has given masterclasses across the United States.
As a medalist of the New Orleans, San Antonio, Cincinnati, Shreveport, and Seattle International Piano Competitions, Atzinger has been praised by critics for his "personal interpretive vision" and "virtuoso aplomb". He was also winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Artist Competition, the Simone Belsky Piano Competition, and the Premio Città di Ispica prize at the IBLA Grand Prize Competition in Ragusa-Ibla, Italy in addition to receiving honors from the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition, the National Society of Arts and Letters, and MTNA. Additionally, he has received grants and fellowships from the McKnight Foundation, the Theodore Presser Foundation, the American Composers Forum, the Minnesota State Arts Board, Foundation La Gesse, and the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation.
With interests in American music, Atzinger has given premieres of works by Stephen Rush, Gregory Fritze, Justin Merritt, Robert Pound, and Kevin McCarter. His debut recording on the MSR Classics label featuring Samuel Barber's Piano Sonata, Op. 26 also received high marks, including special mention at the 8th annual International Web Concert Hall Auditions. More recently, Mr. Atzinger received honors at the 10th San Antonio International Piano Competition for his performance of the commissioned piece, Ivory and Ebony, by Joan Tower. He has also recorded music of eight other American composers for the Naxos, Centaur, and MSR labels.
Mr. Atzinger's orchestral performances include the Louisiana Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony, Springfield Symphony (MA), Jackson Symphony (MI), Mankato Symphony (MN), and the St. Olaf Orchestra, and he has worked with maestros Mischa Santora, Klauspeter Seibel, Rossen Milanov, Kevin Rhodes, Neal Gittleman, Stephen Smith, Kenneth Freed, Steven Amundson, and Timothy Muffit among others. Also an accomplished collaborative pianist, Atzinger won first prize at the Sydney Wright Memorial Accompaniment Competition and has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota.
In addition to degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Michigan, Atzinger earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. He counts among his teachers Julian Martin, Robert McDonald, Anton Nel, David Renner, and Carolyn Lipp. Additional keyboard studies with Timothy Lovelace, Edward Parmentier, and Penelope Crawford. Prior to his faculty appointment at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, he taught at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania.
