The Sedge Hats is a one-act chamber opera based on the Japanese folk take Kasa Jizou. Edmonds Community College music faculty John Sanders composed The Sedge Hats in 2002 as the culminating project for his Master's Degree in Music Composition.
The Sedge Hats draws upon traditional Japanese musical and aesthetic elements. John infuses folk melodies, vendor calls and other artifacts collected in field recordings during his two-year work as an English teacher in Osaka, Japan.
Each night, John will begin with a pre-show talk on the nature and structure of the piece, including demonstrations of traditional Japanese music on the koto, a thirteen-string Japanese zither.
