Soul Down: Naima Shalhoub & Jackie Gage
Soul Down is an expression of the modern movement of music in the Bay Area; when the sun goes down, the music that accompanies it empowers cultures, genres, and the force of music within the world. 2014 Jazz Search West Finalists Naima Shalhoub and Jackie Gage unite with this project once again in the space they first met, The Sound Room (Oakland, CA) in a tribute to jazz, art and soul.
Special for this evening, both artists are in the depths of recoding their debut albums, and attendees can support their work.
Naima Shalhoub is a vocalist, songstress, actress and educator with an MA in Postcolonial Anthropology currently based in Oakland, CA. Naima has been performing in the Bay Area since 2010 from community centers to nationally acclaimed venues such as The Great American Music Hall, Yoshi's, The New Parish, Union Square, and has been featured in music festivals in Oakland, San Francisco and Tampa. With a velvety voice that goes down like smooth wine, the 24-year-old singer Jackie Gage easily captures listeners in her unique sound, with a grace and beauty that channels torch singers of decades past. With the support of San Jose Rotary, prominent shows at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2012 and 2013, and multiple residencies at nationally-recognized venue Blackbird Tavern, among others-- even performing the National Anthem for Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta--this San Jose native is making her way into the heart of California. She recently returned from a Winter 2014 tour, where she shared her music with audiences from Sacramento to San Diego, Hollywood to San Francisco.
