Summer: The Sun King - France
The sun is the center of our solar system, much like the French kings in the 17th and 18th centuries appeared to be to their people; almost supernatural, divine apparitions. Summertime is about the power; nourishing as much as burning, of the sun; the glamour and the warmth, but also the dissolving and radiant quality of light and heat.
In the anticipation of hot summer evenings, we present radiant music from the Paris courts, by the usual suspects (Couperin and Rameau), and dramatic cantatas for soprano, colourful instruments and basso continuo by Grandval and Lemaire.
