Winter: Cold Genius - England
Frost, the "Cold Genius" in King Arthur is perhaps one of the most successful theatre roles Purcell ever created. Examples from his masterpieces King Arthur and Fairy Queen; an exquisite cantata by his French colleague Lemaire, and medieval tunes will feature a Bass soloist.
The English flavour continues with the fantasias of C. Simpson, who wrote superb contemplations on each month and each season. Icy, piercing compositions and the sweetest consolation compete for the listeners' attention and affection.
Also in this programme, we will include some excerpts of Haydn's "Jahreszeiten - Seasons" in Neukomm's string orchestra arrangement. Haydn, much like Handel, could not be occupied by the English nor by the German people exclusively.
