California Youth Symphony, November 14 Concert
The award-winning California Youth Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Leo Eylar, presents its 59th concert season in the Bay Area. This season marks the 20th anniversary for Maestro Eylar as California Youth Symphony Music Director. This season's opening concerts (2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 14 at the San Mateo Performing Arts Center and Sunday, November 21 at Cupertino's Flint Center) will unfold with Roman Carnival Overture by Hector Berlioz first performed at the Salle Herz, Paris on February 3, 1844.  A stand-alone overture intended for concert performance, the piece weaves themes from Berlioz's opera Benvenuto Cellini including music from the opera's carnival scene.  The program continues with guest soloist Ray Anthony Trujillo performing the compellingly virtuoso Violin Concerto No. 2 by Polish violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski.  Also to be performed is Medea's Dance of Vengeance, a composition by the American composer Samuel Barber derived from his earlier ballet suite Medea recorded by the New Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Barber in 1956.  Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera took great pride in composing with Argentine folk music, particularly music of the Gaucho â€" the Argentine cowboy.  In his most famous work in this genre, Estancia, composed in 1941, the music speaks about life on the cattle ranch (estancia).  The concerts conclude with the intriguing Salome: Dance of the Seven Veils by Richard Strauss, German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras.
