FootFalls
The BareFoot Collective (tBFC) is pleased to announce FOOTFALLS, the third annual fall concert featuring contemporary dance from local artists. In celebration of the growing contemporary dance community in Tacoma, this year's FOOTFALLS features new work by tBFC Co-Directors Michael Hoover and Katie Stricker as well as guest companies BQDanza (A.D. Carla Barragán) and the MOVE!NG Company (A.D. Kate Monthy). From their roots in a small studio theater, tBFC is delighted to be partnering with the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts for the first time! With performances in Studio 3, FOOTFALLS will highlight the talents of dancers, choreographers, musicians, and costumers from across the greater Puget Sound community, including composer Meredith Connie, singer songwriter Vicci Martinez, and visual artist Paula Barragán.
The BareFoot Collective is delighted to welcome back guest company BQDanza who will be presenting the whimsical "Nincompoopiana," a dance and puppetry piece which explores the rebellion against the status quo through five larger than life puppets. The Nincompoopiana aesthetic movement, a rebellion against the pretty and respectable, began in the 1880's. Carla Barragán re-states this concept by introducing five archetypical characters who discover each other through simple and not so simple propositions.
Also joining us this fall is the MOVE!NG Company, who will present an excerpt from choreographer Kate Monthy newest piece, "a life that feels like dying." The piece explores life addictions, good and bad, that destroy and consume individuals and are enabled by our surroundings: people, environment etc. This is the company's second piece in collaboration with Vicci Martinez, local and national singer songwriter, and will premier in its entirety January 16th, at the Triple Door in Seattle.
tBFC Co-Director Michael Hoover will be presenting a new piece for three dancers, in which long pieces of elastic connect and bind the movers. In typical Hoover style, the piece integrates both visual and movement art as the dancers stretch and pull at the leash created by the elastic. The joyful piece includes pedestrian movement as well as high energy action.
Katie Stricker's (tBFC Co-Director) new work "Right Angle and the Fact" explores the relationship between artists and electronic media. The Dancer shares the stage with an analogue television as well as live musician Meredith Connie, and must work to maintain a connection to her expressive and emotional self.
FOOTFALLS is presented Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20 at 8pm in Studio 3 at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts. Saturday's performance features a pre-show lecture/demonstration by guest artist Carla Barragán; both shows will be followed by an artist talk-back. Tickets are $15 (General) and $12 (Students/Seniors) available at the door (Cash or Check) or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/134737. Group Rates are available. For more information please contact the BareFoot Collective at 206-745-0492 or email info@barefootcollective.org.
The BareFoot Collective is dedicated to creating opportunities for dance and related arts in our community. We serve the greater Tacoma area by providing opportunities to take classes, participate in performances produced by professional artists, and exhibit creative work. The Collective develops and maintains a supportive networking environment for the creative community through service projects, grant writing, and ongoing fundraising activities. We seek to provide working studio space for movement and related artists to teach, create, rehearse, and present work. tBFC is an associated program of Shunpike.
