Event
Tibet in Song
In 1950, Chinese forces invaded and occupied the nation of Tibet and have tried for 60 years to obliterate their religion, culture, folksongs, music and traditional dance. Director Choephel, an ethnomusicologist, decided to return to his homeland from exile in India to preserve and record the rich centuries-old music of Tibet before it became extinct. "The music was calling me," he says, "and there was no turning back." After a little while, the director was arrested by the Chinese authorities, without trial, for "collecting sensitive material" and sentenced to an 18-year prison term. Freed after 6 years, Choephel bravely continued filming, adding compelling and heartbreaking interviews with fellow political prisoners showing the power of patriotism and the innate resistance to oppression. Showing now in New York City and winner of many film festival awards.
