Maid, The
Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, The Maid is a sensitive, personal story of Raquel who has worked for over 20 years as a maid for an affluent Chilean family. She is considered family but she and the others know that she isn't. With just a few brushstrokes, Director Silva communicates from the perspective of both the upstairs and downstairs the complicated social and moral dynamic involved in having a live-in maid Actress Catalina Saavedra is absolutely amazing as Raquel. She physically shows her emotional self-destruction and then her transformation once another maid is hired to help her. Her brilliant acting has been lauded at film festivals around the world including the 2009 Sundance Film Festival's World Cinema grand jury prize.
