Troubled Water
This brilliant film was Michael Moore's favorite of 2009 and opened for the 4th Traverse City Film Festival. Jan Thomas, convicted of murdering a child during a petty robbery, is released from prison after serving his sentence. He finds work and solace as a church organist. The music frees him from his paralyzing guilt. Through a series of flashbacks, we slowly witness the crime and how the child died which is as ambiguous as is our feelings toward this young man. The film becomes more intense when the mother recognizes Jan Thomas while playing the church organ. She hounds him, wanting to know the truth just as we do. I won't reveal anymore except that this film's artistic and visceral depiction of guilt, sorrow, anger and redemption is remarkable.
