North Face
Based on a true story, this intensely suspenseful film follows two reluctant German climbers as they compete to scale the most dangerous rock face in the Alps, the Eiger, dubbed the ogre. Set in 1936, they are urged, almost forced, by the Nazi propaganda machine to climb the vertiginous mountain face as a symbol of the party's superiority. The climbers are not political, they are expert mountain climbers who only want to meet and conquer "the last remaining problem in the Alps." Climbing with primitive gear, almost ridiculously meager winter clothing, they are in a race with two other sets of climbers from Austria and Italy. Yet as the climb progresses, the real competition lies with the elements and the unforgiving north face. Hand-held camerawork and actual bad weather gives the film a documentary-like authenticity and immediacy that only heightens the sense of jeopardy.
