ANITA - 2010 Redwood City International Latino Film Festival
Anita is the story of a young woman with Down's syndrome living in Buenos Aires with Dora, her devoted mother ( Norma Aleandro). Following the 1994 bomb attack on the AMIA, Jewish Community Center, Anita's mother does not show up. Anita is left alone, confused and helpless in the big city. While searching for her, she gets help and companionship in unexpected quarters through the simple force of her ingenuous personality and open heart. On her meanderings, she learns not only to care for herself, but touches the lives of those around her, from an alcoholic man to a family of Asian immigrants.
Wrenching, lovely, suffused with life, the film is a profoundly hopeful study of human innocence, compassion and resilience in a fragile, troubled world. Anita reflects a mature cinematic style with superb performances and an expert cast—though first among them is the novice, and completely captivating, Alejandra Manzo in the title role.
